Richard Roundtree was married twice in his life. His first wife was Mary Jane Grant, whom he married on November 27, 1963.
Roundtree and Grant had two children, John and Nicole, before divorcing in December 1973.
Roundtree later married Karen M. Ciernia in September 1980. Together they had three children, Morgan, Taylor, and Evan. Roundtree and Ciernia divorced in 1998.
Roundtree was a very private person and rarely spoke about his personal life in public.
